Korean Journal of Dermatology 1988;26(2):139-144
This study was undertaken to investigate the effect of UVB radiation on epidermal melanoctes of C57BIL mouse, The results are summarized as follows : l) The numerical increase of DOPA positive melanocytes following UVB irradiation was due to both of active mitosis of epidermal melanocytes and the conversion of dormant. malanocytes to DOPA-positive melsnocytes. 2) Long term effects of UVB irradiatinn on the epidermal melanocytes suggest the persistent activation of typrosinase in UVB irradiated melanocytes.

Journal of the Korean Pediatric Society 1993;36(1):138-143
The Kniest syndrome is characterized by disproportionate dwarfism and Kyphoscoliosis which may be associated with flat facies with prominent eyes, cleft palate, hearing loss, myopia and limited joint motion. The skeletal abnormalities are recognizable at birth with shortening and deformity of the extremities and stiff joints. Marked lumbar lordosis and kyphoscoliosis develop in childhood, resulting in disproportionate shortening of the trunk. We experienced a case of kniest syndrome, confirmed by clinical features, radiological features, and histological examination of cartilage. A brief review of the related literature is presented.

7.Intracranial Extension of Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma of the Palate.
Yoon Kyeong OH ; Keun Hong KEE
The Journal of the Korean Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology 1999;17(4):293-298
Intracranial involvement by adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is very rare and there is no report of intracranial extension from the palate ACC in Korea. Intracranial involvement can occur in one of three ways : direct extension, perineural spread, and hematogenous spread. A case report of a 35-year-old woman with intracranial ACC is presented. Initially she had ACC of the right palate and was treated by surgery and postoperative radiation therapy. Three years and 10 months later, the paresthesia in the distribution of ophthalmic and maxillary branch of right trigeminal nerve developed without evidence of recurrence in CT scan. Ptos and total ophthalmoplegia developed sequentially and the second operation was performed. It was suggested that the tumor was spread perineurally along the trigeminal nerve into the Gasserian ganglion and then cavernous sinus and orbit. Seven years and 6 months after the first operation, direct intracranial extension into the right temporal lobe developed via sphenoid bone, sphenoid sinus and temporal bone and the third operation was done. And then lung metastasis was diagnosed. She is alive for 9 years 5 months after first operation.

8.Spontaneous Apoptosis and Metastasis in Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Lung.
Yoon Kyeong OH ; Keun Hong KEE
The Journal of the Korean Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology 1999;17(3):203-208
PURPOSE: To evaluate whether spontaneous apoptosis has prognostic value among patients with squamous cell carcinoma of lung. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Material from 19 patients who received thoracic irradiation between 1990 and 1994 was analyzed. Their stages were II (1), IIIa (8), IIIb (5), and IV (5). Patients were observed from 5 to 67 months (median : 17 months). The spontaneous apoptosis index (AI) and p53 mutation were measured by immunohistochemical stains. RESULTS: AI was found to range from 0 to 1% (median 0.4%). Patients with low AI (AI< or =median) had a much higher distant metastasis rate at diagnosis than patients with high AI. By analysis of prognostic factors for survival, M stage was significant in univariate analysis. AI, chemotherapy, M stage, T stage, and stage were significant in multivariate analysis. The correlation between the AI and p53 mutation was not seen. CONCLUSION: AI was related with distant metastasis at diagnosis and not with p53 mutation. Also low AI group tended to have shorter survival time than high AI group.

9.Primary Malignant Lymphoma of the Epididymis: A case report of involvement by diffuse large B cell lymphoma
Journal of the Korean Cancer Association 1998;30(5):990-996
Isolated involvement of the epididymis by malignant lymphoma is very rare and almost invariably is associated with lymphoma in the adjacent testis. To date, there are four case reports of primary epididymal lymphoma. In this case, 74-year-old man presented with a 3 cm, painless left epididymal swelling. Extensive staging work-up showed no evidence of extraepididymal spread. The epididymectomy was performed. The enlarged epididymis was firm and entirely replaced by whitish gray homogenous tumor measuring 1.8x0.9 cm. Microscopically, the tumor revealed an interductal, highly cellular infiltration, distorting the normal epididymal architecture. The lymphomatous infiltrate was polymorphic, though the predominant cell type exhibited a large irregular and vesicular nucleus. In many areas, small reactive lymphocytes, eosinophils, and occasional plasma cells were interspersed among the neoplastic cell population. Mitoses were frequent. The small lymphoid cells focally infiltrate through the wall of some tubules and small veins. A variable pattern of sclerosis was present throughout much of the tumor. Also there were non-specific granulomas. Immunohistochemical staining revealed that the large cel1s were B cells (CD20 positive) and conclusively lambda light chain restriction. The smaller reactive lymphoid cells were composed of a mixture of B cells and T cells (CD3, UCHL-1 positive). The DNA analysis of lymphoma shows a diploidy DNA content. S phase fraction is 21%. To date, the patient, who treated with chemotheraphy, remains well 9 months after diagnosis. Most lymphomas of testis and epididymis occur in older men, have an intermediate or high grade, diffuse histology, disseminate early, and follow an aggressive clinical course. This case is some similar to the conventional most lymphomas of testis and epididymis. But unusual fetures included that the tumor showed only confined to the epididymis and marked sclerosis.
